Official full name: Tate No Middle Name Given McGillicutty,

According to character description on the official website,
"Tate is an A/V nerd with a nervous demeanor and a daaaaark secret."
Tate is known as a control-freak obsessed with horror movies. That's why he chose to major A/V. As it can be understood during the game process, other students don't really like working with him: he's generally considered quite mean, especially when being director of a set; he often argues with his actors, film crew, yells at newbies and even crows if they spoil his set. According to Veronica,
"I've never seen him hang out with anyone. He looks strung out ALL THE TIME. But he also, like, reads books? And is a huge massive fucking wet blanket? I dunno, man. I dunno what his deal is."
However, when the player takes Tate's route, he is shown to be a very vulnerable and responsive person. He is rather cynical about people in general, stating that it is "a dumpster fire world full of dumpster fire people". Yet, if the player progresses their relationship with him, it is obvious he has a softer side as well; for example, he will buy the player coffee and even remember their favorite drink order.
Tate is also shown to have fairly severe substance abuse issues, ranging from cigarettes and caffeine to cocaine. The caffeine and cocaine are likely used to fuel his day-long editing sprees, while the cigarettes help manage his extreme anxiety. He also grows psilocybin mushrooms in the vent within the editing dungeon and microdoses them while working on his Film Noir final; apparently, the coolants in the Slasher U vents give the mushrooms a certain edge that Tate enjoys.
School life[]
Tate applied to Slasher U when he was 17 years old and has been attending since he was 18. He is currently a junior at age 24, taking a longer time with his degree due to his personal issues. Although the player does not see Tate attending class, he often speaks of staying up ridiculously late to work on films, so it is safe to assume he is a dedicated student.
As mentioned previously, Tate finds it difficult to get along with others and his history of being bullied seems to have followed him into college. While playing truth or dare, Tate will sometimes "dare" Sawyer to protect him from fraternity members who assault him on the way to class. However, it is also true that Tate can be rude to well-meaning people, like Hexecutioner, who Tate derides for being unintelligent.
Past[]
Tate, when asked about his family, will talk about past abuse he experienced in his childhood. This information is only revealed after progressing your friendship or romantic relationship; otherwise, he is exceptionally tight-lipped about his family compared to other characters.
When the player has a deeper connection with him, he talks about being beaten by his father, mostly for no particular reason. He talks about his father being a 'real shithead' and how he never wants to see his father ever again. Additionally, he mentions how his father drinks rather heavily. Due to this abuse, Tate would move out at a relatively young age, only being 17 when he left, after applying to Slasher U. Since he has no contact with his family, he is putting himself through school independently.
Even though it is not explicitly stated in game, it’s also hinted that he dissociates when talking about his abusive experiences, since he gets a spaced out look on his face when speaking to the players.
As the player progresses into Act 1, following the reveal of his traumatic experiences, Tate will text them in a panic asking for them to come down to the A/V dungeon. He tells them that his father has learned where he is and is planning on coming to visit. Tate is an emotional wreck and asks the player for help when the time comes to confront his father. As of the most recent update, if the player agrees, Tate and them are still waiting for his father to arrive; this will likely happen in later acts.
Besides his father, Tate also has a mother and sister. He doesn’t have much, if any, contact with them either and the player does not learn much about them. In fact, Tate likely knows little about his sister now, since he claims she’s around 14 or 15 now and he left 7 years ago; thus, she was only 7 or 8 when he ran away. He isn’t even sure exactly how old she is. His mother works for the Bureau of Land Management in Zoning.
Dark Tate[]
Dark Tate is the name given to the eldritch abomination that lives in Tate. The creature appears as a red mass writhing with tentacles, showing Tate trapped inside and he speaks in all capital letters. He is cruel to the player and quite possessive over Tate, seeing himself as the young man’s protector. The player can learn about him through two main ways. For the first method, the player must reach a certain relationship threshold with Tate before asking “what’s the most fucked up thing you’ve ever done?” He then shows the player Dark Tate, who can be triggered to control Tate by insulting him repeatedly. For the second method, the player can have sex with Tate and get him too excited, which also triggers an episode with Dark Tate.
Regarding his origin within Tate, the creature says when Tate was about 8 or 9, he was beset by troubles and,
”One night, using blood, sweat, tears, and a great personal sacrifice, young master Tate gave some of himself in order to summon me.” (The personal sacrifice mentioned is not known as of the most recent update.)
Whatever the results of the summoning that night, it is not until approximately 8 years later that Tate became aware he was sharing his body with the Being. After failing a trigonometry test, due to both simply lacking math skills and having an intense fever, Tate’s father begins another round of physically abusing him. Tate describes dissociating while experiencing the abuse, fantasizing about the lives of the people across the street from him and placing himself outside of his body, then fully blacking out. According to witnesses, a “dark vision” that looked like “the maw of Hell” broke loose, snapping both of his dad’s elbows out of place and breaking his clavicle, before his sister hit Tate on the head and stopped him.
In the months between that initial event, and leaving for Slasher U at 17 he states he, “only broke out into eldritch horror hives four more times,” though Tate says he doesn't have any awareness or memory of what happens when Dark Tate comes out. During an event in the game, triggered once the player has a high enough friendship with him, Tate meets the player outside their dorm whilst covered in blood. Tate explains that he was accosted by some drunk fraternity members, who call him a homophobic slur. This the last thing he remembers before he blacks out and regains consciousness to find Dark Tate had killed one of the men. He will then ask the player to dispose of the body.
Tate says that although he sometimes really hates living with Dark Tate in his body, he does not regret inviting him in.

- His favorite music genres include: shoegaze, 80s-90s industrial and goth, and, to a lesser extent, old school emo. Also, his top five bands, in no particular order, are: KMFDM, Nine Inch Nails, Alien Sex Fiend, Franz Ferdinand, and Bauhaus. If the player explores his room, they will note the abundance of Alien Sex Fiend records.
- He has had same pair of glasses since probably middle school and keeps fixing them himself. They're not the correct prescription anymore.
- Especially loves sound design and frequently mentions this in-game. He's a (former) sound design class AT; he mentions silent film sound design peculiarinis in one of store dialogs.
- His middle name is, legally, "No Middle Name Given" because his father could not be bothered to make one up and wrote that on the birth certificate.
- His preferred drink order is a black coffee with a double shot of espresso.
- Tate initially disapproves of the "Carrie-ing" tradition at Slasher U Prom, arguing that it was created to humiliate unpopular kids like him. Although, he can be persuaded if the person being "Carrie-ed" is a popular kid.
- Unfortunately, he has been stood up on dates multiple times as pranks and this can make him slightly distrustful of any flirting.
- If the player character's pronouns are "he/him" and they choose to be intimate with Tate, he will confess that he has not previously been intimate with another man before.
- Tate has only tried riding a bike once when he was little, resulting in injury and subsequent mocking from his father. He has never gotten on a bike since and is terrified of anyone trying to teach him.
- He loves it when his romantic partner shares their favorite movies with him.
- Tate is secretly very scared by horror games, but has played classics like Silent Hill 2.
